Major Organizations
Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity(CAAWS)
A Canadian non-profit organization founded in 1981. Their mission is to "ensure that girlsand women have access to a complete range of opportunities and choices and have equity as participants and leaders in sport and physical activity." Their web site includes such topics as gender equity in sport, how to encourage girls to get active, women & leadership, how to prevent harassment & abuse in sports, awards & scholarships, network, publications & books, history of women's sport, and links to other sites on women and/or sports as well as women's magazines. This organization also provides a free e-mail subscription service.
Women's Sports Foundation-U.K.
Founded in 1984 to "pursue and promote equity for women in and through sport," this is the only organization in the U.K. that is solely committed to improving and promoting opportunities for women and girls in sport at every level. Their web site introduces their publications & merchandises, links to other organizations for women & sports, and researches on such issues as careers, media coverage of women's sport, physical education, eating disorders, participation, coaching.
Women's Sports Foundation-U.S.A.
An U.S. non-profit organization founded by Jean King in 1974. Their goal is to "improve the physical, mental and emotional well-being of all females through sports and fitness participation." Their web site provides a variety of information including funding, awards, resource library, links to other sport organizations and sites for women and kids,egnancy, international women's sports, racial/ethnic diversity, sexual harassment, weight control, etc.).
Womensport Australia
Established in 1991, this organization has a close relationship with various Australian government agencies. Their mission is to "facilitate full participation, equity and access for women in and through sport and physical recreation." Their web site carries updated news and information on women & sports, such as events, publications, and awards, as well as links to other sites on women in sport.

European Women and Sport Group
International Olympic Committee (IOC) Women and Sport Working Group
Established by Juan Antonio Samaranch in 1995, the working group has advised the IOC president and the Executive Board on women and sport. Like all other IOC commissions and working groups, it is only an advisory body and composed of representatives of the three components of the Olympic Movement (IOC, IFs, NOCs) as well as an athletes' representative and independent members. Located within the IOC web site, the place provides not only information about the group but also the IOC policy for the advancement of women, "Women in the Olympic Movement" (in case the link is not active, go to the other site).
Women Sport International
Women Sport International (WSI) dedicates itself to "bringing about positive change for women and girls in sport and physical activity at all levels of involvement." It is a member organization of the International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG), which was formed on the occasion of the first International Conference on Women in Sport held in Brighton (U.K.) in 1994. WSI's site offers its newsletters, information brochures on sexual harassment and abuse in sport, and links to other organizations and sites for women in sport. Also you can learn about its Task Forces regarding the "Female Athlete Triad" (anorexia/bulimia, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis), physical activity and women's health, sexual harassment, and the masters athlete.
National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS)
Since 1899, this U.S. organization" has championed equal funding, quality, and respect for women's sports programs." Their efforts have lead to national championship programs in collegiate women's sports and to the passage of Title IX legislation. Their web site includes programs & events information, publications (including their newsletters) & links, and FAQ (on Title IX, participation statistics for girls programs, etc.).
International Association for Physical Education & Sport for Girls & Women (IAPESGW)
Founded in 1949, IAPESGW "supports its members working for women's and girls' sport and physical education, and provides opportunities for professional development and international cooperation." The international organization also sends a representative to the International Working Group on Women & Sport (IWG), whose major objective is to monitor and encourage implementation of the 1994 Brighton Declaration on Women & Sport and the 1998 Windhoek Call for Action. This web site outlines its activities and information on upcoming conference (the schedule and papers to be presented).
The International Working Group On Women and Sport (IWG)
The IWG, established in the first World Conference on Women and Sport held in 1994, is a "co-ordinating body consisting of government and key non-government organizations with the over-arching objectives of promoting and facilitating the development of opportunities for girls and women in sport and physical activity through the world." The group is assisting the third World Conference on Women and Sport, which will be held in 2002 in Canada. Their site illustrates the group's objectives as well as the Brighton Declaration and the Windhoek Call, products of the first and second conferences. It is in the process of including information on the upcoming conference.

Gender Equity in Sports
Based on an ongoing project by Women's Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Iowa (U.S.A.), this web site "is designed to serve as a resource for any individual investigating the state of affairs in interscholastic or intercollegiate sport." It is a good place to learn about Title IX, such as its legal aspects, related complaints & lawsuits, related actions, and resources.
Herald's Title IX Library
he site is a part of the online archive of The Brown Daily Herald published by Brown University (U.S.A.). It includes in-depth information on the Title IX gender discrimination in women's athletics lawsuit currently pending against the university, with every story run in the newspaper on this landmark lawsuit since 1992.

Canadian Journal for Women In Coaching
The Women in Coaching program of the Coaching Association of Canada introduces The Canadian Journal for Women in Coaching. The premise of the Journal is that timely, accurate, targeted information will go a long way towards creating a healthier and more positive environment for women coaches, in Canada and around the world. During the research phase, a worldwide search turned up little information that is specific to the situation of the woman coach.

Distinguished Women of Sports
This is a sports section of "Distinguished Women of Past and Present" web site, online biographies of hundreds of women in a variety of fields who "contributed to our (American) culture in many different ways." The sports section introduces female athletes in several categories and includes lists of recommended books and related links.
SportQuest Women
As a part of Sport Quest, the "virtual resource center for sport information," Women in Sport page introduces a variety of sports (both usual and unusual) and provides links to related sites with their brief summaries. Special Feature of this page includes such categories as awards/scholarships, harassment, history, self-esteem, girls in sport, health, leadership, and conferences, as well as articles on women in sport.

Human Kinetics (HK), headquartered in the U.S., is an international publisher specializing in physical activity and sports science. HK's website contains Sport Information Gateway where scholars, researchers, and professionals can obtain information on the field of physical activity. "The News" in the Gateway is worthy of our attention as it provides information about research, grants, educational opportunities, conferences, and associations in the field.
